Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is the martial art taught by all Bujinkan Dojos.

It is comprised of elements from Nine separate classical martial art schools which have been brought together by the current soke Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei.

​

It is a sōgō bujutsu (総合武術 – Comprehensive martial art) which includes bōjutsu (techniques involving six foot staff), jōjutsu (techniques involving four foot staff), kenjutsu (sword techniques), battojutsu (drawing and cutting with a sword), sōjutsu (spearmanship) and naginatajutsu (techniques using a glaive) among other disciplines.

Some of the schools are complete martial arts in their own right while others are more specialised and are meant to complement existing martial skills.

​

Instruction is given in both armed and unarmed combat combining both traditional waza and modern applications.

The training is suitable for both men and women of all ages (although a minimum age limit of sixteen applies in most dojos).

 

Soke Masaaki Hatsumi

Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi is the Soke or Grandmaster of the nine schools of the Bujinkan Dojo. This title was passed to him by the previous Soke Toshitsugu Takamatsu sensei, who died on April 2nd 1972.

Hatsumi Sensei was born in Noda City Japan on December 2, 1931. He attended Higashikatsu High School in Kashiwa City located in Chiba Prefecture. After graduating high school, he attended the Department of Literature at Meiji University in Tokyo, majoring in theatre studies, and also the Advanced Acupuncture and Moxibustion Medical School located in Yotsuya.

Hatsumi Sensei founded the Bujinkan Dojo in the late 1970’s. The name means Divine Warrior School, or Hall of the Warrior Spirit, and is named in honour of the previous Soke Takatmatsu Sensei.

​

Each year Hatsumi Sensei sets a theme which he will follow for the year, either a particular school or a particular weapon or a combination of both.
